Understanding Cataracts: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

What Are The Symptoms of Cataracts?

Cataracts often develop gradually, so you may not notice symptoms right away. However, as the cataract progresses, you may experience:

  • Blurred or hazy vision: This is often the most noticeable symptom. You may find it difficult to see clearly, especially in low light conditions.
  • Faded colours: Colours may appear dull or less vibrant.
  • Double vision: You may see two images of a single object.
  • Halos around lights: You may see rings or halos around lights, especially at night.
  • Increased sensitivity to light: Glare from headlights or sunlight may seem excessive.

What Causes Cataracts?

Several factors can contribute to the development of cataracts, including:

  • Ageing: This is the most common cause of cataracts. As we age, the proteins in the lens of our eye can begin to clump together, causing the lens to become cloudy.
  • UV exposure: Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can increase your risk of developing cataracts.
  • Medical conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, can increase your risk of cataracts.
  • Eye injuries: Trauma to the eye can sometimes lead to cataract formation.
  • Smoking: Smoking has been linked to an increased risk of cataracts.
  • Medications: Certain medications, such as corticosteroids, can increase your risk of cataracts.
  • Genetics: A family history of cataracts can also increase your risk.

Cataracts Treatment

Cataract surgery is the most effective treatment for cataracts. It is a safe and common procedure that typically takes less than an hour. During the surgery, the cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL).

Most people experience a significant improvement in their vision after cataract surgery. Recovery is usually quick, and most people can return to their normal activities within a few days. You may need to use eye drops for a few weeks to help prevent infection and inflammation.

Preserve your vision and quality of life by scheduling an eye exam with Mr. Ambrose if you're experiencing any vision changes. Early detection and treatment of cataracts can make a real difference
