Hello, my name is Ian Ambrose and I am a consultant ophthalmologist specialising in glaucoma, cataract surgery and general ophthalmology.
I look forward to helping with your eye problem, whether as a one off consultation, ongoing care and monitoring, surgical treatment or indeed whether you would just like a personalised review of your glaucoma care with enough time to address your individual concerns and questions. I provide private consultations and surgery in Winchester at Sarum Road Hospital and in Basingstoke at the Candover clinic.
My NHS practice is based at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester and I am the clinical lead for glaucoma across Hampshire Hospitals. This means I can dovetail your private care and NHS care, ensuring continuity even if your private appointment with me is just a one-off to avoid the unfortunate lengthy wait for the oversubscribed NHS service.
I have always enjoyed working in busy NHS clinics, though appreciate the difficulties felt by patients seeing a different member of the team each time they visit - this frustration is not one sided and so, through my private practice, I aim to provide an antidote to this. It is very rewarding to be able to spend more time with my patients and build relationships based on continuity beyond what the NHS is able to manage.
I have a passion for operating and teaching the next generation of surgeons. In my NHS role I am an educational supervisor and a clinical supervisor for the next generation of doctors and regularly teach specialist trainees both cataract surgery and glaucoma surgery. My private practice allows me access to the latest intraocular lens technology and I can tailor which lens to recommend on a very individualised level, whether it be a mono-focal (single focus), EDOF (extended depth of focus) or multifocal lens - this will depend on many different factors, including your lifestyle and requirements as well as ocular comorbidity - I will make sure we decide together what is the right choice for you.
